Christmas: if you build it, they will come…

We browbeat our landlord into getting the flats we live in a christmas tree. We have some decoratioins, but we’d like to make it more of a community thing…. The plan is that if we leave it bare for a couple of days at the entrance to the building, other flats will come and drop decorations on it. (We’re doing the if you build it, they will come approach to Christmas decorations)….

So it currently exists like this:

I really enjoy Christmas.

I like the spending time with family. I like the festive music, seeing friends. I enjoy the food. I like the time off, and the Christmas episode of Doctor Who. It’s genuinely fun.

I suspect, that’s because I don’t do anything about Christmas that I don’t like. I skip Christmas cards (I send cards for every conceivable other occasion – Moonpig is genuinely taking more money from me than Amazon over the year). I’m not a massive fan of Strictly Come Dancing so I don’t watch that. I skip Christmas gifts entirely.

The skipping gifts actually took a few years to wind down – I committed to only buying gifts from Oxfam Unwrapped for several years, while been very clear to anyone who might be considering getting me a gift that I had. ENOUGHT. STUFF. Eventually people got the message, and in the last couple of years I’ve moved to not sending out the Oxfam Unwrapped gifts, but giving a the amount direct to Oxfam.  It’s nice, there is no shopping, no competitiveness, no guilt and no bill.

Christmas is still slightly more expensive than the rest of the year – partly because there’s a lot of going out to dinner with friends (I’m not a particular fan of Christmas Parties, but I do like a spot of competitive anecdote telling) and the odd bit of buying crackers and extra food and the like.

I’m currently setting up the christmas tree that the landlord for our set of flats dropped off.

Let’s see what happens next….

EDIT:

Quite a lot happened next, over the next few days more and more decorations started appearing, as far as I know, without any of the flats talking to any of the others. A nice touch was that fairy lights appeared, but without being plugged in, then someone else moved the tree to plug it in, and then we came back later and someone had produced a extension lead to reach the socket and moved the tree back…
